Good News: The Eastern Cougar Declared “Long” Extinct

Hunted out of existence a hundred years ago, the federal government has finally declared that the Eastern Cougar is no more.
For conservationists, this is actually good news, it allows for the reintroduction of the cougar from the west.

Scientists who have recovered Eastern Cougar DNA from old skins are telling us that there is no genetic difference in cats. The east-west distinction was inaccurate to begin with and now that a non-existent animal is no longer being protected, cougars can reclaim their traditional range in the east once again.  More

  1. Well we in the west have plenty of them, however I have been following this story and it’s bull shit. a couple years ago the Florida Panther (same damn cat) was declared endangered too. Hows that working out. Wolverines were declared extinct in Northern Cali a bazillion years ago. Yet they keep showing up in High Sierra game cams.

  2. You mean there’s none that can hop into someones yard and eat their dog? Out here in the hills one will be shot. The county will perform a necropsy. Often times their stomachs will be full of cats and dogs.

  3. Is Dr. Tar a liberal?
I know farmers who hate the big cats and would shoot them on site.
    Ever hear of the www.sierraclub.org/?
They are a bunch of fucking communists and care about these deadly cats.

  4. Let’s drop a couple of mating cougars in Central park in NYC along with some wolves, some bears, coyotes, vultures, and all other kinds of large predatory animals just for the fun of it so they can enjoy them just as much as we do in the Western part of the U.S.A. They deserve it and can find out just how nice and cuddly these wild animals are.

  5. The problem with not having these cats around in the east is actually a serious one – we have coyotes killing our small pets and attacking other animals in packs. They have no natural predators here like you folks do out west.

WE also have the human coyotes as well but Trumps working on that problem.

  6. Hans,

Wait till you have a feral pig problem… Every time I visit my family’s land, I see coyotes (the canine variety) trying to attack the pigs. The cats are too busy going after fawns and piglets to deal with the coyotes. Rural California North of Ukiah is under siege from all three.

  7. Just what everyone needs – more big fucking cats to eat their children and dogs.

We had one in the conservation area near here a couple of years ago that killed a guy.

    izlamo delenda est …
