I love stuff like this.

I’m not a big fan of the song “Peg,” but I can watch these studio behind the scenes stuff all day long.

  1. Damn,
    Saw them in the nineties.
They were not my cup of tea growing up, but I was in a band with a guy who listened to these guys, and he taught me theory deciphering their songs.
RIP Mr. Becker, I enjoyed the hell out of your music.

  2. These guys are/were the musician’s musicians and as such are icons. Very creative tunes and original sound. (You knew you were listening to a Steely Dan tune.) Rest in peace Walter Becker.

  3. they were magicians in my eyes/ears. I especially loved the smooth flow (but i was a smooth jazz fan at the time).
Creative, haunting melodies. Wish i could have seen them play.
    thanks for the memories.

btw, just scored me a classic stereo system at a garage sale. Equalizer, panasonic turntable, amp, etc etc. Loving it.

  4. One of the first concerts I ever saw. Can’t buy a thrill era. I remember that it was in the livestock pavilion at the Nevada State Fairgrounds. The power was not sufficient to the amperage they were drawing and the power kept going out during jams like Reeling in the Years. They were really pissed. Didn’t tour much after that.

  5. Luckily I saw them two years ago. Although they’ve been at it for 40 something years, they could still put on a great show. One of the best I’ve seen. Very memorable.

  6. Well at least he didn’t die in the 70’s. He is a couple years older than I am.
The 60’s suck everything is an effort, the 50’s were the last time I felt like doing something.

  7. Steely Dan is a special group for my family. Everything they’ve done is incredible in our eyes. This is a terrible loss… I wonder how I’m gonna break the news to my dad. 🙁

God be with Mr Becker’s family, and may he rest in peace.

  8. Walter Becker’s contribution to music is astounding. Wishing peace and comfort to his family, and gratification in knowing his life brought joy to so many others.

I’m a huge fan of this group, and if I had to pick only one desert island album, it would probably be The Royal Scam. It was the last (and I’d say best) of their albums that had prominent, muscular guitar parts. After this, they moved to California, and released Aja – such a masterpiece, but with a definite change in character from the NY feel on all their prior recordings.

In looking over their history, they put out a album every year from 1972-1977, and every one of them is a classic.

Rest In Peace, Walter, and thanks for sharing your music with us.

  9. Listening to this now I’m up to album 2, Countdown to Ecstasy, and is apparent that they pursued musical satisfaction over Top 40. My Old school. Is the closest to top 40 on the whole album.

This is melancholy fun. Lots of memories happy and sad springing forth.

  10. The mind takes one funny places when listening to life soundtracks. Wondering about a talented guy who played guitar and we had lots of adventures together I’ve lost touch with. We were huge steely dan fans. He and I went to that 74 concert and were roomies. He worked at the dry cleaners. I worked at the pizza joint. Actually got fired from pizza joint because I asked for the night off to see steely dan. Boss said no. I went anyway.

But what about Fritz Springmeyer? A pal.

Life moved on. I wonder if Fritz is still amongst us? Funny talented guy.
Sorry. That’s where old music takes me. What about Fritz?

  11. college in Mobile, Ala from 71-76, SD was one of my fav groups to come around, much better than the fake, druggie Bruce Fagstein, they always were on somewhere in the quad…RIP Walter
