How California’s Gas Tax Compares With Other States

CPR: The lies by opponents of Proposition 6 — the measure to repeal the LATEST GAS AND DIESEL TAX INCREASES — are breathtaking. Many people believe opponents when they falsely claim that — if Prop 6 passes — there will be essentially no funding for roads and bridges.  No one — even proponents of Prop 6 — are adequately presenting the actual numbers. Especially the numbers compared to the other states.

Let me help:

In California, we now pay about 56 cents a gallon in state “gas pump” taxes — our state excise tax and sales tax. This figure is scheduled to rise dramatically (and automatically) in future years, but let’s put that fact aside for this comparison.

In addition, we pay the hidden CA “cap and trade” tax.  It’s estimated by the CA Legislative Analyst’s Office at 10 to 12 cents a gallon. Using 10 cents, that brings our total CA state gas taxes to 66 cents a gallon — easily the highest total gas tax in the nation.

Prop 6 will reduce that CA gas tax figure 12 cents a gallon (the recent tax increase amount).  That means that California will still be collecting about 54 cents a gallon — a decrease of 22%.  That reduction does NOT eliminate funding for roads and bridges.  Not hardly!

But here’s the thing that no one talks about:  Even AFTER Prop 6 is passed, California will STILL be collecting the SECOND HIGHEST TOTAL GAS TAXES IN THE NATION!  Only Pennsylvania will be higher.  Most states are much lower.  more here

  1. L.A. County had a 1/2% sales tax increase on the ballot 2 years ago, ‘to help the homeless’. No, what it meant, and what it always means, is that the CA legislators (or L.A. County in this case) spent all the money (among the highest taxes in the country) and didn’t have enough, so they chose an emotional appeal to sneak another tax increase in. Same thing they always do – say they will cut pay to teachers, police, firemen, when really what they are doing is spending extra on pet projects.
Also, every single bond initiative, same thing – legislators won’t pay for it so they ask voters to approve the additional expenditure.

  2. Here in Washington we have a carbon tax on the ballot. May be the first in the nation. Where will the money go if it passes? To the general fund to spend as those bastards want.

  3. it needs to be $1.7299 a liter only then will that keep the riff raff off the roads.

let em take uber or lyft. z3r0 Fuq’s g1\/3n

also, for those that don’t or won’t have drivers insurance in cali, i say, make em pay at the pump. make it $2.7499 per liter and that includes insurance for only that tank of gas in the car.

drivers licenses should be $1,800 one time only for the initial first one, there after, $100 a year and an extra $400 for that year for drivers insurance, or no $100 license. then it goes up to $800, just for the license and you still have to provide your own insurance. if not we deport you to san francisco and you pay the transportation cost to cart your ugly ass there.

  4. Live in Pa but it’s been several years since I bought gas here. I actually buy it cheaper in the State of Maryland whose taxes are less on most everything.

Our succession of communist demoncratic governors are responsible (Rendell never met a tax he didn’t like!)

  5. In 60 years the Kennedy/Bush clans have turned the state with BY FAR the highest standard of living in America to one of the poorest.

For those of you who’ve not taken out their wallets and paid attention . Here is what the liberal Bush folk have done here the last 30 years. They have put progressives in the “leadership” of the Cal GOP. Every liar thy’ve run for a state office has been not the conservative they claim but a far left liberal. Naming names: Carly Fiorina. This hyper progressive ran HP into the ground 15 years ago. So the liberals running the GOP decided she should run for senate. She was so far to the left, Boxer in comparison was “conservative”. 3 years ago the Bush/Rove clique ran her as the #4 back up to YEB for President. She deservedly finished in double digit place in almost all primaries. This year she has backed 3 candidates for state elections. ALL DEMS! For emphasis CARLEY BACKED ALL DEMOCRATES THIS YEAR Like the Rove/Bush folk telling us to vote Clinton in 10/16. After Yeb signed a pledge to back the GOP candidate.*

Rove/Bush “GOP’ are Marxists for Rove et. Al “the ends justify the means.”!@#!?!

*. Before carpetbagger Carley moved out west she lived in Texas! *. Coincidence? Not on your life!

  6. Joe6pak I voted no on initiative 1631 the so called carbon tax when I mailed my ballot in yesterday. I despise Jay Inslee and his smugness thinking that by imposing a carbon tax that he’s gonna save the state Of Washington from globull warming. My guts tell me that this bullshit initiative will fail but we’ll have to see just how many brainwashed numbskulls will fall for it next Tuesday. And I am so sick and tired of all the campaign ads that I get in the mail that immediately go into the garbage.
