No, the real narrative according to Stahl is that Trump attacks the press so no one will believe them when they report negative things about him. The false narrative is that Trump attacks the press so no one will believe them when they report the truth about him. There is a big difference between “negative” and “truth.”
Trump is no dummy, as he has proven over the course of a lifetime. Just as the press could not bring themselves to report anything which reflected badly on Obama (even when Obama was caught in outright lies), Trump knew that all of the press spin would be negative whether warranted or not. So Trump attacked, and continued to attack in order to blunt what has been a concerted effort to destroy the Trump presidency.
Leslie Stahl is a prima donna bitch, and she’s just pissed that Trump’s attack on the media in general have lessened her credibility and stature. Boo fuckin’ hoo; this is something the network news talking heads brought upon themselves and they only have to look in the mirror to find the blame.

Sometimes the media reports the truth, but in a negative way. “Trump saves baby from burning building” becomes “Trump ignores foreign policy meeting; removes baby from building instead.”
Trump could have told Stahl that he attacks the press to lessen the blow of negative reporting. He would not have told Stahl he attacks the press so the public will not believe the truth.
