It was called NotPetya and it was unleashed on Ukraine in 2017. A variant on an earlier piece of cyber sabotage, Petya (named after a killer Russian satellite from “Golden Eye” a 1995 James Bond film) NotPetya was designed to exploit a Ukrainian tax preparation program. It ended up spreading to companies doing business with the former soviet state, even infecting computers in Russian firms.
Among the victims was shipping giant Maersk, who lost an estimated $200 to $300 million, pharmaceutical giant and Merck & Co. which lost an estimate $300 million and FedEx another $300 million. Total global losses were estimated at $ 10 billion. Here
