Stefan Halper’s role in CIA efforts to influence 1980 presidential election revealed

American Thinker: Now that his name has spread beyond the conservative blogosphere, Stefan Halper’s past activities are up for examination, and it turns out that 2016 was not the first time he had worked on behalf of an intelligence agency to influence a presidential election. Don’t take my word for it, just examine the record published in the New York Times in 1983.

Glenn Greenwald of The Interecept dug up the archival material:

Four decades ago, Halper was responsible for a long-forgotten spying scandal involving the 1980 election, in which the Reagan campaign – using CIA officials managed by Halper, reportedly under the direction of former CIA Director and then-Vice-Presidential candidate George H.W. Bush – got caught running a spying operation from inside the Carter administration. The plot involved CIA operatives passing classified information about Carter’s foreign policy to Reagan campaign officials in order to ensure the Reagan campaign knew of any foreign policy decisions that Carter was considering. (snip)

…not until several years after Reagan’s victory over Carter did this scandal emerge. It was leaked by right-wing officials inside the Reagan administration who wanted to undermine officials they regarded as too moderate, including then White House Chief of Staff James Baker, who was a Bush loyalist.

The NYT in 1983 said the Reagan campaign spying operation “involved a number of retired Central Intelligence Agency officials and was highly secretive.” The article, by then-NYT reporter Leslie Gelb, added that its “sources identified Stefan A. Halper, a campaign aide involved in providing 24-hour news updates and policy ideas to the traveling Reagan party, as the person in charge.” Halper, now 73, had also worked with Donald Rumsfeld, Dick Cheney, and Alexander Haig as part of the Nixon administration.

When the scandal first broke in 1983, the UPI suggested that Halper’s handler for this operation was Reagan’s Vice Presidential candidate, George H.W. Bush, who had been the CIA Director and worked there with Halper’s father-in-law, former CIA Deputy Director Ray Cline, who worked on Bush’s 1980 presidential campaign before Bush ultimately became Reagan’s Vice President. It quoted a former Reagan campaign official as blaming the leak on “conservatives [who] are trying to manipulate the Jimmy Carter papers controversy to force the ouster of White House Chief of Staff James Baker.”

Halper, through his CIA work, has extensive ties to the Bush family. Few remember that the CIA’s perceived meddling in the 1980 election – its open support for its former Director, George H.W. Bush to become President – was a somewhat serious political controversy. And Halper was in that middle of that, too.  more

  1. Yup, looks like Halper was everyone’s go-to guy, wasn’t he? Who better to know how to manipulate and make up info, disseminate it, and shape shift to avoid detection. Sounds like he wrote the book on this sort of operation. Looks like POTUS Trump has landed another blow not merely to the last crooked administration, but to several decades of corruption in our elections.

I just read this quote today (can’t remember the source): “Truth is the first casualty of war.”

    > Think the Bushies are having an ‘oh shit’ moment about now?

Nope. Those “huge” government pensions going to be cut? Eligibility of George P.D.Q. Bush to be appointed an American throne reduced? Invitations to “participate” in signing “The American people” to more checks cashed by former and current “business” partners drying up? Heck! Position on (a Good™ man) Forbes’ lists dropping? So buying new “friends” means slumming in a cheaper shop?

“The dogs bark. The caravan rolls on.”

  3. Justify? Well, they can try, but it’s a different situation. What halpers did for GHW was stealing info from carter’s foreign policy notes to use against him in a debate. It’s slimy but not the same as what they did to Trump. What halpers did under/for 0bama was try to bait and or set up Trump to look like a criminal. And Mueller is still getting nowhere. lol

  4. I’m waiting for McCain’s name to pop up somewhere.
If hillary, mueller, obama knew, then for sure McCain did, too. After all, he was the one running breathlessly over to the FBI with the phony dossier.

  5. Lest anyone thing Bush had any respect for Reagan (he was the original and enduring NeverRegan) remember what he said to the Russian president when he was Reagan’s VP:

Soviet dictator Mikhail Gorbachev tells us that in 1987 then vice president George H. W. Bush distanced himself from his own administration by telling him, “Reagan is a conservative, an extreme conservative. All the dummies and blockheads are with him…”http://spectator.org/39326_americas-ruling-class-and-perils-revolution/

  6. Still the democrats attempted to launch the October Surprise investigations against Reagan for “colluding” with the Iranians to release the hostages because they couldn’t accept losing

  8. Hey Abigail, that quote is widely remembered being uttered by some Pol protesting Woodrow Wilson’s machinations to involve the U.S. in Europe’s ‘Great War’. It probably originated, however, with one of the ancient Greek Tragedians, Aeschylus: “In war, truth is the first Casualty”. Similar can be found in both Sun Tzu, and von Clausewitz. I’ve always felt the phrase appropro for NWO-NeoCon,& most dictator aspirant types.
