Are supermassive black holes going to eat the universe?

FOX: The largest black holes grow faster than their galaxies, according to new research.

Two studies from separate groups of researchers find that so-called supermassive black holes are bigger than astronomers would have calculated from their surroundings alone. Supermassive black holes are enormous gravity wells found in the center of large galaxies.

No stress, though: The black holes are generally no longer growing, and they aren’t capable of eating their host galaxies for dinner. [Science Fact or Fiction? The Plausibility of 10 Sci-Fi Concepts]

“The black hole is tiny compared to the whole galaxy, so we are very safe!” said Guang Yang, a graduate student at The Pennsylvania State University who led one of the new studies.

Yang’s study found that the larger the galaxy, the faster the black hole grew in comparison to the birth rate of the galaxy’s stars. The other study found that the masses of supermassive black holes are about 10 times greater than would be expected if these central black holes grew at the same rate as the galaxies they inhabit.

Galaxies and their black holes

Astronomers are interested in the relationships between black holes and their galaxies for two main reasons. First, if they can calculate the size of one based on another, they can determine, say, the mass of a supermassive black hole even if they can’t directly measure it. Second, any constant relationships between the two can help explain the laws that govern how galaxies are formed.  MORE HERE

  1. Satan and God were gazing at the universe. Satan said ‘I can create a galaxy, you watch’ So he reached down and grabbed a handful of dirt. God put up his hand and said ‘wait a minute, you have to create your own dirt.

  2. Are supermassive black holes going to eat the universe?

Nah. Sheila Jackson Lee’s just one crazy Rep. from Texas.

    No worries.

I’d keep an eye on my ribs if we were at the same BBQ, though. Just sayin’.

  3. @tctsunami: Yeah, that’s some real science, all right. Bill Nye, the porno guy.

P.S. – Rachel Bloom is confused. She sings, “…My vagina has its own voice”, but she doesn’t realize that what she’s hearing is only an echo.

  4. You don’t need to go off the planet to find a black hole.
Just hit up south side of Chicago.
Some have added the adverb “shithole” and have been called racist, such as “shithole black hole southside chicongo”
but it is a modifier to reflect realism.

  5. Here is the problem with statistics.
Using statistical data can lead an earnest man down the wrong rabbit hole and thus into Old Crank territory
There is a new study out that the universe is expanding faster than the Hubble Constant says it should. By a lot.
If the basic laws of physics themselves remain un-evolving, then the answer is Yes. Eventually the majority of all matter will end up in the maw of the beast. Other matter on such exotic orbits or velocities that they avoid the black holes will suffer heat death as they cool so much that even the electrons stop and fade away
But these are on time scales that boggle the mind.
What is cool, is the concept of Spin. That ‘extra’ bit of force that resembles the momentum of spin of a particle.
There is an Indian Scientist that posits that spin means that at the center of these black holes that spin will create new universes on some new plane of existence.
This Universe is rich in mystery
More glory to God for creating such an amazing thing

  6. The Universe isn’t expanding – time is slowing.
We use it as the metric because there is nothing independent by which to measure it. Of course, Physics posits that time slows as matter approaches the Black Hole, but it may be happening generally – Einstein suggests that time is relative, as well, and that the matter isn’t really slowing in time (as it approaches the Black Hole), but that the rest of the Universe is accelerating and that the perception is only relative one to the other.

At least that’s what they told us in the Plumbing Shop when the day started slowing down after lunch, but then sped up when we broke out the cards.

    izlamo delenda est …

  7. When there is only the “BLACK HOLE”
All else is desolate void empty space
and the antimatter of trillions of
    massive galaxies,stars and planets
millions of times the size of earth
now fits with plenty of room to spare
on the head of a pin…The hole will
explode with the repeat force of the
Big Bang and so starts another cosmic cycle…
Large & small go on into infinity and
God is the Alpha & Omega…
