Chief Justice Roberts’ Leftward Tilt – IOTW Report

Chief Justice Roberts’ Leftward Tilt

This chart says it all.

There is a history of justices on the right who defect to the left over time. It seems that Chief Roberts is pulling a Rhenquist, who was his mentor.

FiveThirtyEight-

  • Justice Harry Blackmun was nominated by Richard Nixon in 1970 and confirmed unanimously by the Senate. In 1973, he authored the court’s opinion in Roe v. Wade, which protected the right to abortion.
  • Justice John Paul Stevens was nominated by Gerald Ford in 1975. A 2007 Times magazine profile of Stevens called him “The Dissenter” and mentioned the word “liberal” 44 times.
  • Justice David Souter was nominated by George H.W. Bush in 1990; Bush’s chief of staff said that he would “be a home run for conservatives.” He later voted to reaffirm Roe and dissented in the court’s decision in Bush v. Gore, which handed the presidency to the younger Bush.
  • And Justice Anthony Kennedy was nominated by Ronald Reagan in 1987. (Kennedy is not a solid liberal but is known as the court’s swing vote.) In 2015, he wrote the opinion that legalized gay marriage nationwide.

Roberts may yet join that list.

15 Comments on Chief Justice Roberts’ Leftward Tilt

  1. He wouldn’t have ever been Chief Justice unless the Democrats had the goods on him. I don’t know what they have on him, but it is obvious it is something he doesn’t want the public to know about.

  2. Roberts illegally edited Obamacare….

which is not Constitutional via the 10th Amendment, which was passed by reconciliation, which was illegally funding and edited by Obama bypassing the legislature, which had Unconstitutional non–purchase penalties.

So, in other words, business as usual in the District of Corruption.

  3. The sooner Ginsberg passes away then the better for the legal system then. Roberts always struck me as a squish and his ruling on Obamacare allowing the government to argue that it could be a tax or a penalty was astounding. I hate to join a conspiracy but sometimes one has to wonder whether the Dems do have stuff on key people.

  4. What JDHasty said. Roberts is compromised. Ever since he screwed up Barky’s first inauguration by misstating the oath, supposedly nullifying it, and then allowed Barky a do over without swearing on a bible, I knew he’d be trouble. It’d be great if Trump got to pick his replacement. It would probably kill Ruth.

  5. The rumor mill has it that that Roberts is a three dollar bill. Just like with Barry and company, it would be interesting to see a DNA comparison of ” family” members just to see who’s who in the zoo. the principles would never allow it on “privacy grounds”.
