FOX: The cause of death for radio host Art Bell, famous for his show “Coast to Coast AM” and its “X-Files”-flavored focus on the paranormal, has been revealed as an accidental drug overdose. He was 72.
According to the Nye County Sheriff’s office, Bell’s death “was the result of multiple drug intoxication from his own lawfully prescribed prescriptions.”
The Las Vegas Review-Journal reported that Bell “had four prescription medications in his system: the opioid oxycodone, the analgesic hydrocodone, diazepam, often marketed as Valium, and carisoprodol, a muscle-relaxant.” MORE
h/t Larry.
Dang.
I guess he’s completely relaxed now.
Well, that explains a lot.
It was on his show that Mel’s Hole was revealed to the public. Good God, I have had some fun teasing people about that. OK, maybe it was more akin to tormenting than teasing, but I did get a kick out of it nonetheless.

NONESENSE!…with that kind of drug cocktail, he had to ditch it over the Bermuda Triangle….
JDHasty-
“Waters said the hole had paranormal properties, despite the fact locals dumped their garbage there for years. He said a rural resident tossed his dead dog into the hole only to see it later alive outdoors with a hunter. The dog wouldn’t come to him.”
LOLOLOL!!!
Anyway, didn’t they cap that hole? As if thin barbed wire is going to keep people out. lol.
“…Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and hypertension contributed to his death…”
I’ll go out on a limb and say that the prescription medications contributed to his death. All the listed medications, separately and collectively, would have impeded proper respiratory function, and he has impaired by COPD and HT. Im surprised there weren’t other medications listed- appropriate ones for respiratory aliments. They just listed the ones that have a negative image before the public.
If someone was killed by a truck because they ignored a traffic signal and jaywalked, it wouldn’t be said that their ignoring the light caused their death. It was the truck that did it. That truck was coming for Art, it was just a question of when. His compromised state from the medications brought that day to pass. Art Bell perhaps wasn’t using the proper medications, even concurrently, and perhaps he was careless in their use, but Ill give him one on this.
He was a pioneer, and I respect him for what he accomplished.
He must have been in intense physical pain to be prescribed all those meds. Wonder if he had undiagnosed Lupus. Valium is about the only med that actually works to relax the muscles for some people.
I used to enjoy some of his radio shows, and some of them scared the crap out of me out here in the dark countryside when DH got hung up at work till the wee hours prior to daylight.
No one’s going with…. MURTHER!?!?!?!?
The guy was 72 with a 20 something wife. A wife he married mere months after the death of his first wife due to a drug related something or other.
Totes murther. Murther most foul.
JD – – I think you’re confusing it with Mel’s PIEhole.
“Not sayin it was Aliens.., but…it was Aliens”.., oh wrong program..never mind..
I’ll never forget Art, Father Mulachi Martin, the Navajo Elders, those ‘former’ CIA folk who could travel anywhere in the world and never leave their own bodies, and many others. When I was driving the big trucks ‘Coast To Coast AM’ got me through many a lonely and boring night and helped me stay awake.
AND… he turned me on to Lorena McKennit. Bless you and RIP Art Bell.
Art had a world class voice.
I tried to listen to him on third shift Boeing 777 Wings upper panel.
Our hearing protection had AM and FM built in.
He was so lame I had to change the station to Classic Rock most every shift while Classic Rock lasted.
I went through the Hale-Bop wop comet thing.
It was like pulling teeth.
He went down hill from there.
What a voice though.
I also remember when his wife died from an asthma attack.
And when one of his several cats passed away.
RIP Art. You helped me get through drilling/sealing/ filling/torquing hilocks on the first 100 777 wing sets.
JD.
Took me awhile. Anybody remember the crazy guy who would rip on Art all Biblical style? J. D. Man, that guy was funny.
Nice to know it took them this long to close a case,,, maybe they have some tips for Mueller.
Yeah…take those drugs, Citizen, they’re safe and approved by the Federal Government. Too, I have a bridge for sale in Bourne, Massachusetts, should you be so inclined…
Wonder how many doctors he got to write the RXs
Only a dope would take oxycodone, and hydrocodone and valium together, did I say doper?
You have a choice: suffocate slowly, straining for each breath maybe for years or “accidentally” overdose.
End-of-life is a big shit sandwich.
