Members of Congress appear to be lobbying President Donald Trump to make Puerto Rico an independent country, it was reported Friday.

A seven-page draft executive order for the plan — apparently drawn up by a congressional office and leaders of Puerto Rico secessionist efforts — says the island’s independence would result in $617.8 billion in savings for the U.S., the Daily Mail reported.

Puerto Rico also would be provided with the necessary resources for economic self-sufficiency, the outlet reported. More

  1. We will save money, but we will still provide them with the funds to be self-sufficient. In other words, they still wouldn’t be self sufficient.

I say let them sink or swim on their own.

  2. Would this mean all of them that have U.S. Birthright citizenship would be able to move to the Mainland? If so, I guess all that would be left there would be the 11% that want to secede. Talk about your MASS DEPOPULATION!!!

“Puerto Rico also would be provided with the necessary resources for economic self-sufficiency…”

Nope. One or the other, not both. We’d just end up right back where we are in one generation.

  5. The upside to cutting PR loose is the tax savings for the rest of us.
The downside is the loss of US military base in an important region.
Bases that some vindictive politicians may decide to allow China/Russia
    or other unfriendlies to use.

  6. Being U.S. citizens, Puerto Ricans can live any where in the country they wish.
If they reside in a state they can vote instate and national elections.
Any serious threat of independence would result in a stampede to the main land.
An independent Puerto Rico would be a deserted island.
