  1. I’d like to see the number of murders per 100,000 tourists/visitors. It’s a shame when residents kill residents, but being a NON-resident I’m more interested in how likely I’d be to get away with my life if I ever visited one of those places.

And it’s too bad the U.S. Virgin Islands isn’t in there (because it isn’t a country). I’ve read that it is a very violent there.

  2. Uncle Albert

“The US Virgin Islands (USVI) has a high murder rate, and has been experiencing a rise in homicides over time. In 2020, the USVI’s firearm homicide rate was 50 per 100,000 people, which is 8.5 times higher than the rate in the 50 states.”

I knew it was bad. But holly crap.

  3. I see folks commenting on per capita, questioning the number of tourists, etc. The key to all violent crime is whether it is between people who know each other or are strangers. For the most part, the vast majority of murders in the US (other than the gang-related ones) are folks who know each other. While that is not good, it at least means that YOUR likelihood of being a victim is WAY lower than if they were mostly strangers being killed. So yes, some clarity on the numbers would be nice. Some of these places are extremely violent but ONLY in certain areas – which can be avoided. One way or the other, avoid blue cities.

  4. “USVI’s firearm homicide rate”
What about the knife, golf club, baseball bat, machete, voodoo, &c. homicide rates?

The year Chicago passed their un-Constitutional ban on “assault” rifles there were more murders by golf club than by “assault” rifles.

  5. Here is the link to the list. It’s Wikipedia, so…

Yeah, not sure why US Virgin Islands is not on the chart as it is higher than almost all that are. And it was among the worst when my sister ‘moved’ there (for a year) more than 25 years ago.
Haiti less than half of USVI, per the Wiki list. My guess is that reporting from Haiti is not very solid.

  6. Well, they have “very strict gun control laws” according to the article.
I think lots of drugs go through there too. The first time we went to St Thomas the harbor was full of yachts. One of the locals said most were owned by drug dealers.
    Who knows?
    Could be other reasons.

  7. I just spent a week at Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. The resort was spotless, as was the airport (gotta keep the tourists happy). The route between them was a total shit-hole. Trash everywhere. Decrepit buildings, roads and other objects. In contrast, the vehicles on the road were mostly new and in good condition. Many scooters and small motorcycles. I did see three people riding on motorcycle, but heard you often see four. The local employees at the resort and airport were polite and seemed to work hard. They did say to not wander from the resort area.

  8. Not surprising, considering some of the most brutal slavery happened there, and the whole place was a seething cauldron of piracy for centuries. Everybody got their freedom, but the piracy and brutality continue to this day. The only things missing are the white slave masters.

  9. Looking at the linked chart, I was surprised to note that St Croix wasn’t in the mix? I checked it’s murder rate and whadda know, it’s #1 at 92.1!

I’ve expounded previously on this shithole, having personally witnessed the natives at play, I’ll just advise anyone to take it off your bucket list.
