U.S. Chess Star Won’t Attend World Championships In Iran: ‘I will NOT wear a hijab’

bb4sp: Why are they holding the chess world championships in Iran to begin with anyways? Good for her for standing up for what she believes is right.

As one of the most successful women to ever play the male-dominated game of chess, Nazi Paikidze is used to having her moves watched closely.

Her latest has drawn international attention: Paikidze announced last week that she will boycott February’s Women’s World Chess Championship in Iran because the players will have to wear hijabs, headscarves that cover their heads.

Paikidze’s decision will deprive the tournament of one of the game’s brightest stars and biggest draws — the U.S. champion who once told a magazine she would “do everything I can to help more girls get into chess.”

The headscarves, required by Iranian law, have been protested as a sign of oppression in the Muslim country. Paikidze’s decision is part of a growing resistance — both inside Iran and across the world — to laws requiring hijabs.  MORE

  1. Good.
Same thing with why Lazlo will not fly on airlines.
I don’t like people putting their hands on me. I don’t fly.
I give up the advantages of almost instantaneous travel for my perceived dignity.
    Fair trade.

  2. @lazlo
I’m with you on the airline thing, but I’m pleased to report that I made it from Richmond to Fort Lauderdale and back untouched. In FLL they didn’t even have me remove my belt or shoes. Laptop didn’t have to come out of the bag. Nothing. It was pre 911 almost.

  3. Maybe it’s because of what my grandfather went through during the war. But I can’t stand the fact that her parents gave her that name.

Regardless of where she is from our what her heritage is, once here, they could have altered the spelling a tad.

But, like I said. I might be a little sensitive to it…….

Kudos to her for taking the stand…..

  4. back before the Persians became Filthy Mohammedan Savages, they actually invented the game of chess. In fact, the word “checkmate” comes for the Persian phrase “Shah Mat”, i.e. “the king is dead”. So I reckon the chess federation said, “hey, let’s have a tournament in Iran! It’s the birthplace of chess. It’ll be great!”

Of course, as is true with all things Mohammedan, not one lick of progress nor any original ideas have sprung forth from ANY Filthy Mohammedan country from the moment the Filthy Mohammedan Savages took over their countries.
