Hungry North Korean soldiers are being given leave to find food, report says

FOX: Soldiers in North Korea’s army are being given months off at a time to scrounge around fields to find food, according to a new report that describes the dire state of the reclusive country’s food rations.

A photo purportedly showing North Korean soldiers rummaging through a corn field was published recently on Daily NK, a Seoul-based website that covers the North through a network of informants.

Soldiers in North Korea’s army are being given months off at a time to scrounge around fields to find food, according to a new report that describes the dire state of the reclusive country’s food rations.

A photo purportedly showing North Korean soldiers rummaging through a corn field was published recently on Daily NK, a Seoul-based website that covers the North through a network of informants.

“The officers know better than anyone that they must feed their soldiers in order to maintain morale, and that rations of cornmeal with very few calories only serve to instill disillusionment among them,” a source from the northern Ryanggang Province told the website.

Other sources said many residents have been “expressing pity about the situation” and officers in Ryanggang Province have been “giving soldiers 2 to 3 months leave to gather food.”

The website says a poor harvest, a drought and international sanctions have left the government with reduced food rations.

“Even though the price of rice hasn’t changed much in the markets, people are especially worried that the effects of international sanctions will continue to mount and soon cause even more problems,” a source told Daily NK.

Two North Korean soldiers have defected to South Korea in the last two months, with one of the soldiers found to have an enormous number of parasitic worms in his stomach. The worms, one of which was 11 inches, pointed to the hygiene and food problems that are commonplace in the Hermit Kingdom. MORE

At this look-out point there are free telescopes. I could see people CLEARLY thin, wearing baggy clothes milling around pretending to work. NONE of the houses were livable. There are no lights, in VAST disrepair. You don’t even see people hanging laundry or going in or out. There are small look-out shacks (small boxes on the ground hidden under some brush) that try to look sneaky and camouflaged, but they’re obvious, and no one could possible sit in there are day long.

The 7-8 people I saw were tending a small garden.

Tops of the hills are brown sand. The color you see is sparse trees but mostly green underbrush. Erosion and clear-cutting is from as far left you can see, to the far right. What do the animals eat? –if there are any?

The far right is PANMUNJOM (you can’t see it). Another FAKE village that has the same 2 trucks go up and down the road like clockwork. They go over the ridge, then turn around and come back down. Repeat. No one ever gets out. You can see the largest flag pole in the world (N.Korea) so they got that going for them.

Tour = $45-$95. Must wear suit and tie if you walk through the cease-fire negotiating room, and technically cross into N.Korea.
If you walk up to the wall to take a picture, a (S.Korean) soldier yells at you to go back to the yellow line (what difference does 10 feet make?). You can’t POINT into North Korea. They will yell at you. You can’t take a picture of the 3-D display they have of the area, they will yell at you. The gift shop is way too expensive. They show you a shameless propaganda film that makes your eyes hurt from rolling them. You can’t take any picture of their mini-museum. Basically, don’t do anything there, they’ll yell at you.

The look-out point here is only about 3 miles away, you can point (N.Koreans 3 miles away are not offended by pointing), take pictures of everything, do whatever you want.It’s about $10, and about 95% less people. The “guards” are either sleeping or posing for pictures with tourists. You can yell at them if you want, they don’t care.
