Fox: A review of active shooter cases by the Air Force has confirmed what gun rights advocates have long been saying: Firearms in the hands of good guys are often the best bet for stopping massacres. The military branch earlier this month sent out a letter to its base commanders around the nation reminding them that they can authorize subordinates to carry guns, even while off-duty and out of uniform. It also established three programs to help ensure that armed service members are in a position to protect their bases. More

I was stationed for 4 years on an Air Force base that had a commander that was very anti gun and wanted all personnel living in housing to register personal weapons. Most of my career (US Coast Guard) personal firearms were not a problem. Multiple tours on Kodiak Island and everybody had guns. Heck the wives had as much shooting time as the guys. Tours in Miami and Maine and commands allowed them in your vehicles, locked etc.
Common sense says to carry. It’s all the P.C. crap that will interfere. Too many liberated offices that are part of the PC crowd have been advanced as Obama neutered the senior officer ranks. I think a lot of them are Pu__, ah, you get my drift.
Watch for Barky to can another General in …3…2…1
Obama’s only interest in the military was that he was all excited to meet a Rear Admiral because he thought…
I spent 4 years as a BM in Portsmouth, NH. Were you attached to Group Portland? Our CO’s (pre 911) ordered that personal firearms had to be stored in the armory.
Now what about us retirees, etc. with CCW’s?

While at Offutt AFB in the mid-70’s, I moonlighted as a security guard during weekends. That had to be approved by the base commander and the rule was no firearms involved. I carried anyway. If attacked, I figured a Minuteman missile was a little too much.
You took the words right out of my mouth, Corona!
Yep. You can get out of a jail/stockade. A casket is quite another matter.
Unfortunately it’ll still be against the regs to pray.
I hope they make training available to those who wish to carry. Most military personnel have limited or usually no exposure to handguns.
Actual competence with small arms is much less common in the military than most people think. The ‘warfighters’ are a small percentage of our folks in uniform.
I do applaud this decision wholeheartedly.
