Euro News- The self-governing Danish territory has been in the spotlight since US President-elect Donald Trump reiterated his wish to buy the island.
Greenland’s Prime Minister Mute Egede has called for the North Atlantic island to pursue independence from its former colonial ruler Denmark in a New Year speech.
The world’s biggest island — which is home to about 57,000 people — was a Danish colony until it become a self-governing territory of Denmark in 1979. Since 2009, Greenland has held the right to declare independence through a referendum.
“The history and current conditions have shown that our cooperation with the Kingdom of Denmark has not succeeded in creating full equality,” said Egede, who is a member of the pro-independence Community of the People (IA) party. more
If President Trump said, “I want to buy Greenland for $60 billion, that amount to be divided equally among the population!” how long after they all realize that would be over $1,000,000 each do you think it would be before that Prime Minister would cease to be a factor?
There is one large problem with acquiring Greenland. If it were to become a U.S. state, it would bump Texas down to #3 in square miles rankings.
Don’t Mess With Texas
Mute “Button” Egede is just trying to up the price.
Are we counting WWII bombers stuck in the ice as military bases? Yes, there is utility to the territory, and it may exceed the gifts of Seward’s Folly, but just how much will it cost to modify all the keyboards to type those names and change the forms for the lengths of the names? More seriously, “just say no to Socialists.”
In the Air Force they used to tell us that Greenland was a plum assignment, there was a woman behind every tree.
One benefit of annexing Greenland: It would add more white people to the population of the U.S.
In circa 1860’s William Seward negotiated a treaty to purchase Greenland, and congress put a stop to it by refusing to ratify the treaty.
57,000 people, two Senators and one Rep?
Methinks it’s all a ploy by Trump to get Greenland independent, so a treaty, leases for bases, etc. would be easier.
An opportunity to trade away Puerto Rico ?
Little Denmark owning huge Greenland reminds me of the true story of a male Chihuahua dog impregnating a female St. Bernard dog.
