Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band turned 50 this year, and while most critics were hailing the album as a sea change in music, Marcotte wrote that she resents the album because it marked the moment when silly rock n’ roll music became art which somehow excluded women- changing rock from being a women’s thing to a men’s thing.
What the hell is this maniac saying, that women are vapid, and that when rock music became “unsilly” it became a He-Man’s Woman Haters Club?
Conversely, is she saying that men can’t, or don’t, enjoy “silly” pop songs?
I bet more guys like the song My Ding-A-Ling than women. It don’t get any sillier than that.

I don’t empathize with her but I do understand what she’s getting at. Much of Sgt. Pepper’s was on an intellectual level as opposed to the simple emotional rock and roll aimed at the listener’s crotch. Other bands emulated the Beatles and eventually “classical” rock (Yes, Rush, etc.) was born. However, the crotch took over again with disco.

I cringe whenever i hear early beatles music. But, i enjoyed sgt. peppers. its a classic and was a game changer. This womans music (whoever she is) will be forgotten shortly.
