Massive Coral Reef Found Off Coast of S. Carolina

Scientists from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration are reporting the existence of an 85-mile long coral reef 2,000 feet below the surface about 160 miles off the coast of South Carolina.

They believe the reefs formed over thousands of years as new coral established themselves on top of the old forming literal mountains of their own remains. More

  1. One of the latest Leftist bogeymen is plastic waste (grocery bags, 6-pak can holders…) in the ocean.

BUT: German scientists also recently released a report that said this plastic “residue” actually provides a basis (an “anchor” of sorts) for bacteria and other small lifeforms to begin…lifeforms which are very beneficial to the ecosystem.

    Ain’t Mother Nature grand?!

  2. @Lowell:

Dead coral. It cannot live at those depths so this is an archaic reef. A graveyard.

Nope. It’s live coral, just of a different sort than tropical warm water coral. We’ve known about deep cold-water coral for quite a while (a couple of hundred years). It just doesn’t lend itself to casual snorkeling or SCUBA tourism.
