Michigan schools will be allowed to use non-teachers as substitutes amid a worker shortage that has been exacerbated by the spread of the omicron COVID-19 variant.
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced on Monday she signed legislation to address a teacher shortage in the state by allowing staff members such as secretaries and paraprofessionals to work as substitutes until the end of the school year.
Michigan typically requires substitute teachers without a teaching certificate to have an associate’s degree or 60 semester hours of college credit, with some exceptions for employees teaching career and technical education classes, according to FOX2. More
An upgrade for the students
Okay kids, today you’re going to learn how to operate a buffer.
Probably get a better education.
Reminds me of General Mills here in Maine replacing 2000 healthcare workers with 75 National Guard.
The fine art of unplugging the toilet is a useful skill – much more so than feminist studies, for a fact.

So any Tom, Dick or Harry can be a teacher, except, of course, for parents.
quite the profession isnt it. 4 yr degrees up to double masters, and yet you can be replaced with a warm body.
@wild bill
You killed me with the buffer joke.
Episode of the Big Bang Theory: “In America I am janitor…In Russia I was physicist.”
BTw, dont tell my wife i said that…
“Okay kids, today you’re going to learn how to operate a buffer.”
“Don’t you mean a ‘fluffer’? That’s what teacher has been showing us.”
At least the janitors, secretaries and paraprofessionals (plumbers? electricians?) will be able to teach the children some real-life useful skills instead of the indoctrination and propaganda currently being foisted on the students.
Now they’ll get a REAL ejumakayshun!!!
Believe me, The Lunch Lady knows more about “Maff” than the Teachers do, & the Janitors knows exactly which Piss Pot to use!
Michigan needs to grow up.
Michigan Education Association has been critical of the bill. Spokesperson Thomas Morgan slammed the legislation saying educators need increased pay and to be treated “like the professionals they are.” Anything else, he said, would be “at best a stopgap solution to a massive problem.”
That quote tells you all you need to know, doesn’t it?
More than likely, the students will get a better education from people that have actually worked real jobs.
I come from a long line of public educators, including my mother, and all but one, who is a sickening leftist, to the highest degree, are disgusted with the state of education today.
As am I.
“May Become Substitutes”
I bet they can teach a better class room without adding in all the gay pride crap, the racists crap, on and on. Teachers nowadays are nothing more than overpaid babysitters, and bad ones at that.
ALL ^^^ comments are true & scary……
In Tennessee, our daughter is quitting teaching because the teacher shortage is so bad there that they’re trying to teach 80 kids in the auditorium.
And I’m goin for the punt, as long as they can keep politics, covid & weapons off the table & use a common sense approach it just might work in a pinch. I have had worst.
This could be a problem the lone janitor at my little high school commonly drank brake fluid
