Mt. McKinley,Tallest Mountain in North America, Will Be Renamed By Obama

NY Post — President Barack Obama says he’s changing the name of the tallest mountain in North America from Mount McKinley to Denali.

He’s giving the mountain its traditional Alaska Native name on the eve of a historic presidential visit to Alaska.

Denali is an Athabascan word meaning “the high one.”The name has long been a sore spot for Alaskans, who have informally called the 20,320-foot mountain Denali for years.

The mountain was named after former President William McKinley. There have been several efforts by Alaska politicians change it to Denali. But politicians from McKinley’s home state of Ohio have opposed changing the name.

Obama is citing the Interior Department’s authority to change the name.

Obama departs Monday for a three-day visit to Alaska aimed at focusing attention on climate change.

  1. Yes, but it’s bigger than that: quintessentially political campaign gimmickry. The mountain was named Mt. McKinley by a supporter of McKinley’s campaign, and it was a year before McKinley became president. As far as I’m concerned, they could call it Mt. Bubba as long as they’d stop messing with it.

  2. Stranded, you could not be more right. There isn’t a better place on the planet for an oilfield than ANWR. One of the rigs I was on drilled some wells on land very close to ANWR and everyone there knows we drilled a hell of a well. Never been produced though.

  3. It’s going to be called Denali in Denali National Park? That just doesn’t sit right. However, if it will stop climate change then please rename it. Rename more stuff to stop climate change too, like your name from Barry to Barack to Asshole Liar; climate will never change then.

  4. Nobody, absolutely NOBODY, despises Obama more than I do, but I have no problem with the name of that spectacular mountain being changed back to its traditional Athabaskan name. In fact, that would be my preference. If I were cynical, I might suspect some politician(s) got mileage out of renaming it Mt. McKinley?

  5. He’s failed at everything (leadership, race relations, immigration, economy, jobs, taxes, transparency, healthcare, etc.)

    Renaming Mt. McKinley is his brilliant success, he built that. Maybe he should start renaming cities using muslim names.

  6. What a typically Obama non-action move. Alaskans *already* call it Denali, or at least use both names interchangably. And non-Alaskans don’t call it anything because they don’t even know it’s there.

    And those “educated” in libtard-controlled public schools all think Alaska is a big island near Hawaii…that’s how it appears on their maps, doncha know.

  7. The only reason the Emperor has the authority to change the name is because the Feds (unconstitutionally, read the circumstances where the federal government is allowed to own land in a state) have stolen over half of the land in western states.
    Almost all of Alaska exists under the Emperors boot.
    Where in law (I realize that it does not apply to the Emperor) is Soetoro given the authority to change the names of things?
    And, why, is that not the first question on everyone’s lips?

  8. Days before he took over the White House alcove of transition, I told my dumb ass brother that duh won would make America a musloid nation by executive order and say it was all about safety or same shit.

  9. Seriously though.
    Do you think for one second if this Mountain was called Mount Douglass, after Frederick Douglas, he’d be changing it to Denali??\

    C’mon.
    I’m ashamed of the “benefit of the doubt” you’re giving this guy.

  10. Denali means “the Great One” and is also sometimes referred to as “the weathermaker.”

    I can’t stand Obama and the fact that he is coming here for three days does nothing for me emotionally except perhaps make me want to vomit.

    However, this name change effort has been going on since years and the only reason Obumbo got into the thick of it is to curry favor.

    I’m OK with anybody liking McKinley the man, but as an Alaskan it irks the living shit out of me that an Ohio delegate could all these years have kept us from calling our landmarks whatever the f*** we want to call them. We long ago grew tired of Washington State manipulating their ways into our affairs (read a bit of their shenanigans in the history of Alaska’s efforts to become a state, and they haven’t stopped). Ohio is just another in a line of Outsiders (with a capital O) trying to dictate to us what we ought to do, how to do it, what they think is better for us and what we can and cannot have based on what life is like in THEIR backyard–many without ever having set foot in the Great Land, let alone actually living here. And especially given that so many of them think we’re a bunch of rednecks who can field dress a moose but don’t know how to read.

    Our state motto isn’t “We don’t give a shit how they do it Outside” for nothin’.

  11. I don’t think I’m giving him any “benefit of the doubt” at all. In fact I’d go so far as to say it is the ONLY thing that he has done that I agree with. If you have ever seen Denali/Mt. McKinley from a good vantage point, on a clear day, you would know that Denali (the Great One) is a better name. I might be wrong, but I think I remember that Denali is the tallest land mountain on earth when measure from base to summit. Alaska is a great place.

  12. Lisl, one good Alaska saying that I loved goes back to 70’s or 80’s during an oil crunch, probably jimmah cata. Anyway bumper stickers that said “let the bastards freeze in the dark”. Alaskans can have a bit of pride and an attitude sometimes, it is a great place.

  13. I’ll ask again, and this is the point –

    Do you think for one second if this mountain was called Mount Douglass, after Frederick Douglas, he’d be changing it to Denali??

    C’mon Alaskans, you’re missing the forest for the trees.
    He’s doing this because it is named after a white republican president. And it’s an assassinated president, to boot.

    That’s like Giuliani changing Kennedy airport back to Idelwild and having New Yorkers say, “well, if you looked at the area where the airport sits you’d have to agree it really should be called Idlewild.”

    A name is a name is a name.

    The motivation behind changing it is what matters.
    And I’m not being cynical when I say Obama is doing this for “I’m going to be hating on whitey.”

    I don’t care if Athabascans up with the name the Great One 100s of years ago.
    Obama probably just heard about this controversy 6 weeks ago and he’s more than happy to remove another “old white right-wing guy” from the national landscape.
    He’s salivating over it.

    I would be blocking this if I were you because for eternity you’re going to have to hear about how THE GREAT OBAMA CHANGED THE NAME.

    Be careful what you wish for.

    If you’re hellbent on changing the name back wait a few years.
    Don’t let this asshole be a part of this process.

    I know I’ll never look at Mount Denali without thinking of that jug-eared white hating jerkoff.

  14. Meanwhile, Jeb Bush is really pissed off. He’s the one who suggested the name change, except Obama misunderstood him. He wanted it to be called “De nada”…

    🙂

  15. If it were my life’s mission to change the name of the sun to what “my people” called it before anglos named it the sun – I WOULDN’T ALLOW OBAMA TO CHANGE THE NAME.
    I just as soon have it called the sun then to have it called “the star formally called the sun until Obama changed the name – selfie, snap, selfie, snap, selfie.”

  16. Whether it is McKinley or Denali, the bottom line for me is that Alaska is a good place to live. Any of you guys and gals that can experience it will be glad you did.

  17. NYTs-

    Denali’s name has long been seen as one such slight, regarded as an example of cultural imperialism in which a Native American name with historical roots was replaced by an American one having little to do with the place.

    “There’s no denying that for some Americans, the deck’s been stacked against them, sometimes for generations, and that’s been true of many Native Americans,” Mr. Obama said at the time. “But if we’re working together, we can make things better.”

    In a video released on Sunday, Ms. Murkowski cheered Mr. Obama’s decision.

    “I’d like to thank the president for working with us to achieve this significant change to show honor, respect and gratitude to the Athabascan people of Alaska.”

    ~~~~~~~~~~
    Question:
    Are you Alaskans Americans or are you something else?
    You have your Denali now.
    Should we be calling you Alaskan-Americans?
    POC?
    I ask as a cultural imperialist.
  18. If there was a way to stop Obama I’d be all for it. But the republican congress
    Is green lighting every thing he does. I hope the next white president changes everything Obama has done back the way it was.
    Denali right back to Mount McKinley. With a big Fuck you to Obama.
  19. One thing I know for sure is that some of the most knowledgeable and patriotic Americans I’ve known are also proud Alaskans. Just like all of us, we are proud of our home and country.
  20. Hey, I love Alaskans. I employ hundreds of Alaskans. But Alaskans are like the Mexican immigrants. They want to be part of the country by they don’t want to participate in the culture.. They want their own culture. Except for Sarah Palin and her family. Oh and that poor kid, Trip, or what’s his name? Oh, thank you, Trig! Yea, that family really exemplifies what Alaska is about!
  21. Like every other state, Alaska is a sovereign one and just as we don’t aren’t allowed to go butting into the affairs of other states, nobody needs to do it to ours. If you want to call your parkway something silly, go for it. It’s your state’s business not ours.
  22. 0bama shouldn’t have anything to do with it. He’s just seizing the opportunity because he thinks he is the great one and he wants the history books to record that he changed the name. And white lives DON’T matter.
    Let the state of Alaska request the name change, if that’s what they want, not that anti-American pos.
  23. Big, you’re entitled to your opinion and if I never change your mind about it, that’s fine because it’s yours. I’m just not really clear why every other state can speak for or be proud of itself but when we do we get treated like traitors or hyphenated jackdaws. Somehow non-Alaskans so often have to belittle our perspective because they have no clue what it’s like to live here. It’s not a “whitey” issue to us, it’s an issue of being able to make our own determinations, and Natives were **never** the only ones calling for you lot in the L48 to correct your maps. We–Natives and non– recognize that white males played a huge role in overcoming the bullshit being dished out by Washington State and succeeded in achieving statehood for us to the greatest nation the planet has ever seen.
    A host of streets, schools, malls, locations, etc. are all named after these and other white males, which Alaskans of all races have no problem celebrating. Yet somehow you suggest that we might be calling ourselves something as divisive as “Alaskan-Americans.” If someone from your city decides “Arctic Boulevard” is a really stupid name for a street there, should we start asking Floridians to decide if they are “Floridian-Americans”? And how about other L48 states, given that it’s **there** the rash of idiotic anti-American crap is happening in schools and workplaces, banning the American flag FFS, prohibiting US flag tee shirts, not allowing veterans to hang flags outside their own homes–not here.
    Whatever Obama’s motives are, he’s already being recognized for what he is–a panderer and kiss ass loser who can’t handle being bested by someone he hates (Palin) and needs to get some face. So he attempts to curry favor with Alaskans; some will buy it, other won’t. But we’re supposed to play this waiting game you propose, so no Republican president ever—just like before—will validate Alaska’s right to something as simple as naming her own geographical areas. Just like no Republican has ever done jack squat about it, he just shrugged his shoulders, and we know it even if you don’t and he can’t admit it. It was Lisa Murkowski’s bill and her strong push that rolled it. Obama probably has no clue he’ll still be remembered as the worst president ever and that the name was always Denali for us; the Alaska Geographic Board ensured that.
    You should come here for 4th of July, sometime, Big, we have HUGE celebrations and every one gets some shooting in. I admit the fireworks maybe aren’t as awesome as Florida because of our midnight sun, but our Americanness is just as strong as yours.
  24. Native Alaskans’ corporations have their share of the blame for that as well–pandering to shareholders who get strangled out of their villages by federal restrictions and activists who–common denominator again–have never lived in the places they are trying to destroy. Do they have any idea how much a gallon of milk costs in Barrow? There are no trees or farms up there and PETA is screaming about the evil whale hunters. Pretty soon they’ll have bloody fishing illegal in Kachemak Bay.
    I’m not ranting at you, MJA, just pointing out that once more, L48 activists decide they know better than people in Alaska, how people in Alaska ought to live, and then agitate for these changes and don’t stop until they get it.
  25. There is so much oil here I’ve heard it could supply us for some crazy amount of years, like 300. (Feel free to correct that, I just remember it was something insane.)
    We’d also be able to give Saudia and Venezuela the finger. I’d love that.
  26. Yonks ago (in uni) I used to work downtown at a shop and I’d go check my mail before going to work, then stop out back for a look. The post office building is right by the Cook Inlet, and on clear days you could see the peak of Denali rising up in the distance beyond the water, which is pretty impressive considering that it’s exceedingly rare to see it when you’re actually at the park.
    I’ve heard that statement as well, by the way. It’s something pretty awesome to be out in Talkeetna by the climbers who are getting ready to go up. Some of them have mentioned that also, and I have always appreciated the respect they give to this massive mountain.
  27. Dig a little deeper and be honest–you aren’t paying for me, you’re paying for the treaty Carter enacted to fund for, amongst other goodies, medical care for Alaska Natives and Athabascans (aka American Indians). Away from Anchorage (the largest city) in most census areas they make up more than 50% of the population.
    You’re also paying for the troops to be stationed here–I think there are eight or nine posts and AF bases, and at least one Coast Guard. If they aren’t here defending us, then they’re also not defending or safeguarding you.
    And then of course there is the over 50% (maybe close to 60%) of lands owned by the Feds that they pay to maintain and ensure Alaskans aren’t allowed to soil with their dalit hands.
    Why don’t you take your grievance about monies to them and while you’re there, ask them what they’re doing in Appalachia.
    You’re free to disagree with my opinion but in your quest to take down the rednecks, you’re just exposing your own ignorance.
  28. Obama likes Denali, while the GOP loves DENIAL.
    They’ll let this donkey do ANYTHING he chooses to do.
    In that process, they are throwing more dirt over their own grave with each passing day, which brings each successive unAmerican event.
    Conservative Americans have been disenfranchised for 70 yrs, excepting the Reagan presidency.
  29. did you know they are closing the Interstates from PA all the way to SD to transport a huge chunk of coal to Mt Rushmore to carve into O’s likeness? It is true I saw it on Scopes!!!!
  30. I concede the fact that the way obama has gone about this name change is as abhorrent as everything else he has done. But at this point, what difference does it make? ………just kidding,he is a BASTARD! That being said, Denali is a better name.
