A convicted cop killer walked out of prison on parole Friday after nearly 40 years behind bars — over the angry protests of police unions and some politicians.

Herman Bell was released from the maximum-security Shawangunk Correctional Facility in upstate Ulster County on Friday around 5 p.m., according to the state prison website.

Bell, 70, was convicted in 1979 of the 1971 murders of Police Officers Joseph Piagentini and Waverly Jones in Harlem. He was also convicted of the 1971 murder of a California cop.

Prison officials said Bell would be supervised in Brooklyn for the rest of his life upon release. They declined further comment.

In the hours before Bell walked out of prison — after nearly 40 years in captivity — police union president Patrick Lynch and state Sen. Martin Golden once again denounced the Parole Board’s decision to release him.

“Think about a family. Think about the Piagentini family which is now devastated once again,” said Lynch. “Ask yourself if it was your brother or sister or husband. Wouldn’t you want folks to help?”

Lynch said Bell intends to move to California.
