RIP Mallory – IOTW Report

RIP Mallory

unnamed-1

Eugenia-

We lost our Mallory cat today to chronic renal failure.  She was born 10/01/93 and was a month and 1/2 shy of her 22nd birthday.  Mallory was a tortoise shell and had plenty of tortietude.  She loved people including children yet hated other cats.  Any cat approaching within 5 feet got a high pitched shrieking scream from Miss Mal.

Mal had done extremely well for such an old cat.  She could still trot at high speed and loved to eat Fancy Feast and home made meatballs.  Since she had renal failure we did ‘kitty dialysis’ twice a week at home which was giving her 150 ML of lactated Ringers subcutaneously.  Yesterday she didn’t good but perked up with the fluids. Today she crashed.

Off to the ER vet we went.  the place was packed.  I asked if my friend the vet tech supervisor was in.  All I wanted was a hug and shoulder to cry on.  She came out and whisked me to the back, called our favorite ER vet in and Mal went to kitty heaven to be with her bussies Siegfried, Rascal, Casey, Princess Tugboat Titanica, Noneck and more.

I always thought Mallory the tough cookie would live long enough to pee on my cremains.  Yep, I want to be cremated and reused in some litter boxes when it’s time.  Guess it wasn’t meant to be.– Eugenia

  1. Mallory was a beautiful kitty. I revisit the loss of my companions each time I read about an iOTWorlder losing their fur buddies. There are no words I can utter here to soften your heart break. Know that you are not alone, though. Bless you, Eugenia.

  2. Eugenia, thank you for loving Mallory so well. You know she loved you back.

My Asher also had renal failure. Spent a year on sub-Q fluids. He seemed to know that what I had to do was for his good.

I’m so glad you had special attention at the Vet ER. That is the worse time and caring people really help ease the pain.

Zoe kitty is sitting by my side right now and says, “Meoww” to you.

    RIP dear Mallory.

  3. I just lost a 23-year old male tabby, who loved nothing more than playing with the top of the water in the communal cat-dog water bowl. My wife would float a chunk of ice in it every afternoon to cool the water, and he loved nothing more than pushing the ice under and watching it bob back up. When he passed, my wife came downstairs and all the cats and dog were arrayed around him where he passed away during the night.

We’re currently fighting feline breast cancer in our alpha-female. It is a virulent disease that’s never cured, only put into remission.

All of you with female kittens. If you spay them before they ever come into heat, there is a 95-98 percent chance they will NEVER develop breast cancer.

  4. LBS that is exactly what one of the young assistants at our regular would say. She was younger than Mallory. Not old to drink and was envious of a drinking age cat.

  5. Thank you BFH for posting this for me.
Thank also to all who have posted good thoughts and condolences. It means a lot.
The other cats are feasting on roast chicken tonight in Mal’s memory.
The director at the shelter where I volunteer just sent an e-mail about a super crabby 14 year old 19 pound cat that came in to the shelter. I may need to check her out and bring her home. My kind of cat.

  6. Deepest condolences on the loss of your beloved family member from one who has been there way too many times. I hope the support and understanding from this wonderful community brings you as much comfort as everyone brought me last year when my darling Kikki died.

  7. The good news is you had near 22 years of her presence which is a fine thing.

My dog was attacked yesterday by the neighbor’s(5 houses away) pit bull mix, tow of them, when one jumped on the storm door and knocked the lever down to open it. My dog was leashed, walking down the street by my oldest boy. He was pissed and still is.

Poor Cassie has had a rough life thus far being a stray, getting sick with K-9 hemorrhagic fever even before she came to us earlier this year. Punctures, lacerations and bruising. Spent 2 hours at the emergency care clinic for pets last evening.

The owners, both LEOs were terrified and embarrassed it happened and opened up his check book to pay for the care. I didn’t hold him to blame as it was an instinctive pit bull terrier thing.
More precautions will be used in future regarding door.

Seems trauma was the story this weekend.

  8. Sorry for your loss, Eugenia. My Hazel died two years ago and I still think I’ll see her walking out from under the bushes in the front yard when I drive up from work. Having my other kitties was a help. Here’s hoping that 14 year old shelter kitty works out.

  9. What an interesting looking cat. Eugenia, I’m very sorry for your loss. Our furry friends leave big holes in our hearts when they leave. She was a lucky cat to have had you to care for her all those many years. You obviously have a huge heart. Maybe the shelter kitty is meant for you.

  10. Glock, I can relate. Our neighbor’s German Shepherd attacked our little Yorkie. When we found him the shepherd had him in her jaws around the middle and was shaking him, to kill I expect. Our little guy suffered 7 broken ribs, and bruised heart, lung and stomach. He is recovered but we still have to be careful with the ribs. We recently learned that they had to put the shepherd down due to illness. I love dogs, but I have to say I wasn’t sorry to see this one go. I no longer have to worry as much if our dogs are in the yard. Hope your Cassie is doing better.

  11. Callie, I witnessed a poodle being killed by a larger dog when I was young. I will never forget that trauma.
That is my biggest worry when I have my chihuahua Roxy out for a walk.
I would likely be in jail if anything ever happens like that…

  12. I’m sorry for your loss. At least she went through life with people that loved her. I tell my wife how it’s a shame that some people aren’t loved as much as we love our pets.

  13. Eugenia, Mallory reminds me of Weenie Heenie here at home. She and Mamba were my 2 tortoise shells. Mamba was killed by a driver, her head flattened like a plate, and I hope she didn’t know what hit her. She had emerald green eyes. Weenie is the runt of 6 cats and is adorable. My 2 cats inside are Panther (solid black) and Tiger (orange tabby). I will share Weenie with you if you like. She has been fixed and can’t have children any more. They are all going on 2 years old. Hang in there. You did well by Mallory.
