President-elect Donald Trump is reportedly looking to privatize the U.S. Postal Service (USPS), three people familiar with the matter told The Washington Post in a report published Sunday.
Trump has made known his desire to detach the USPS from the federal government in conversations at his Mar-a-Lago estate, sources informed the outlet, including with Howard Lutnick, his commerce secretary pick and co-chair of his presidential transition team. More
“Take the U.S. Out of the Postal Service”
That would get my stamp of approval.
another n-grifter organization
I think the USPS should move to a split delivery day system where business mail is delivered Mon, Wed and Fri; while residential is delivered Tues and Thurs.
No more Sat regular delivery.
Letter carriers have split routes.
Less carriers needed (labor savings) and less equipment operation and maint costs.
My mailman got it wrong again today and sent me mail that belongs to a business a block away from my house with same address number as my house. This happens far too often, and I end up taking their mail over to them at least once every other month or so. They’re always happy to see me but not our idiot mailman.
Inquiring minds want to know: It the Federal Reserve system is not part of the Federal Government, why should the Post Office???
Our government in Canada has just mandated the postal workers (on strike for a month in the busiest mail period of the year) back to work tomorrow. I am the executrix of my late sister’s estate and I do have some Christmas bequests to send out. I will do it in mid-January as there is quite the backlog and I bet the postal workers will be “working to rule”. I don’t care, I truly hope the next Canadian government gets rid of the CBC and privatizes the Postal system.
The challenge will be that the PO is called for in the Constitution. The Supreme Court will one day hear if a constitutional duty of the government be privatized. The army does it with contractors overseas.
Actually the PO is not called for, as such, in the Constitution. Article 1, Section 8, Clause 7 says that Congress *has the power* ‘To establish Post Offices and post Roads’. It is not a requirement. At the time it was important to have universal delivery, particularly access. Notsomuch these days.
During Trump’s first term I was saying it should be sold to Amazon. I still think that – or perhaps another large company that has distribution nailed.
Honestly I can’t remember the last time I mailed anything. It’s all e mail. Hell my customers text me. Give them to AMAZON or shut them down completely. As far as that idiot that covers his ears when the truth is so painful maybe he can get a job at Berkley teaching business courses.
Take the Unions out of government.
It has no place there.
Judging by what’s in my mailbox, it’s now the junk mail delivery service.
I had a package, just this week, go from south Ill-noise (4 hours north of me) to bumblefuck Texas. Then from bumblefuck Texas to Kansas City (4 hours northwest of me) then to Springfield MO, 45 minutes from me, to Ava, MO which is 15 minutes away. It only took 3 weeks. And yet I have received shit from England in 3 days.
Essplain that to me.
I live in a 2 family house yet Social Security sends me mail in My Own Name to the 3rd floor .
My mailman can’t read . Along with my own mail which I brought in along with loads of junk mail was something for my next door neighbor. He’s Chinese and I am not.
I mailed a desk calendar to my Late Great Husband ‘s best friend who was born on the same day as he . The desk calendar is called EFFIN’ Birds and it’s hilarious.
I support the post office and its storied history… the Pony Express… neither sleet or snow… etc.
YES, mistakes and misdeliveries are made.
But people, ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR MINDS wanting to substitute a private service?
The FedEx Envelope cost to ship is $9.75 for a 3rd day delivery by 5 PM or $30.10 for a 2nd day delivery by 10:30 AM.
And that’s without pickup service, and not into your mailbox but maybe just thrown onto a porch. Or where it can get wet. And without mail forwarding or to a PO box address. Or if it requires a signature and you’re not home, depending on where you live, it’s a long trek out of your way.
While I miss the 3 cent stamp of my youth, I’ll take my chances on the 73 cent stamp to send a real birthday or holiday card, or mail a check to pay a bill.
And don’t forget that you have to use its approved packaging.
And that it won’t go everywhere…
And the USPS works even when, e.g. there are post-hurricane or other issues when electricity is out for days or weeks.
Complain complain complain. And beyond stupid to complain about your “junk mail” that you get for free.
You will be really sorry if this service is lost.
Honestly, with fed-ex, UPS, E-mail, text messaging and fax machines and Amazon do we even need a postal service?
.
I often thought something like GOb’s idea of split service would be a good Idea, maybe charge people a small fee if the want or 5 or 6 day a week delivery.
Also get rid of most post offices and turn the rest into small stationary stores, sort of like a mini office depot.
I purchased 5 automobile rims from some cat in LA. I paid $190 for shipping. One arrived Saturday. He texted me yesterday that the shipment was too large to deliver. Now I get to carry my happy ass downtown to pick up my remaining 4 rims from the post office the week before Christmas…. PERFECT!
I once received a letter addressed to Tim MxNxxx (only my real name), MD posted from CA.
Took about 6 weeks, but I got it.
The Post Office is plagued with Unions, bureaucracy, red-tape, DEI (on steroids), and other assorted problems but is awesome when you consider how much mail they move as well as they do.
Yeah, it has its share of thieves and lazy miscreants but it seems that every large organization has them and can’t get rid of them.

Well, my Late Great Father-in-law was an Old fashioned Mailman. My Late Great Husband was a Postal Clerk. My Hubby worked for Parcel Post for a long time, overnight shifts, night differentials you name it . His last job was at our local Post office, working the windows and dealing with the public. People would turn up at the Post Office to complain that they were home all day waiting for a package, bringing in a slip to claim a package FROM FedEx !! One year around Christmas time a woman stopped by and brought hundreds of what she called HOLIDAY CARDS. She paid for the stamps and shoved the cards to my Hubby and told him YOU put the stamps on – I have better things to do. So he did , Every last one of her cards received a KWANZAA stamp .
Tim – FJB, The “Letter Carriers” have a route they work every day. Along the way they get to know people’s routines & might be the 1st to notice when something’s amiss.
