WASHINGTON (CBSDC/AP) — Two Democratic lawmakers are calling on the Obama administration to not allow Donald Trump’s name to go up on a new hotel in the nation’s capital.
Reps. Ruben Gallego, D-Ariz., and Tony Cardenas, D-Calif., sent a letter to the Interior Department and General Services Administration to stop the Republican presidential candidate’s name from going up on the hotel at the site of the Old Post Office Building.
“Trump’s recent and repeated remarks disparaging women, Mexican-Americans, and other Latinos are hateful, divisive and completely inaccurate,” the two wrote in the letter. “We firmly believe this kind of repulsive speech has no place in our public discourse. As a result of these comments, the Trump name is now inextricably linked to the anti-immigrant, anti-Latino and anti-women sentiments that he continues to loudly and publically espouse.”
Gallego said in a statement that the “federal government has a responsibility to keep emblems of racism and hatred out of public lands.” MORE
