The Positive Side Of California’s Rolling Blackouts?

DC: ProPublica reporter Abrahm Lustgarten suggested California’s rolling blackouts contain one silver lining: It highlights for people the gravity that awaits them if climate change is not addressed.

California’s largest public utility’s decision to shutter large sections of the energy grid forces citizens to notice what things will be like if climate change is not addressed, Lustgarten noted in a New York Times Magazine editorial Tuesday. He did remember to emphasize the blackouts are bad for a lot of people.

“But a mandatory blackout does have one radically positive effect,” he wrote. “By suddenly withdrawing electrical power — the invisible lifeblood of our unsustainable economic order — PG&E has made the apocalyptic future of the climate crisis immediate and visceral for some of the nation’s most comfortable people.” read more

  1. You’d think trimming trees under power lines would be easier than changing the entire Earth’s atmospheric balance.

PG&E too lazy? Did California suddenly run out of Illegal Mexicans who do grounds keeping? Hollywood have them all on retainer?

  2. even steven, you are right. It is a Communist criminal crisis! Not a climate crisis. Nothing like being in the line of fire, suddenly!

“Want to know what it looks like when they cut the power so no one can be warned? HERE IT IS (now the second video down)

This morning I posted that when power in California got cut, no one had television, radio, or internet to warn them of an approaching wildfire, thus leaving them only to be warned by cell phone, and the warnings did not go out. So they sat there in their homes with an approaching fire until the fire was RIGHT ON THEM, and a majority of the people were still not panicking yet having cars parked in sleepy driveways with a couple families realizing what was going on and running like hell to get out of there at the last minute.
This is what it looks like when the government is actually seeking to destroy everything, and is a direct result of communist type policies truly going mainstream in the U.S. for the first time.”

  3. He has it backwards. This shows what life would be like if that idiotic Green deal was made law. There is still no impact from so-called climate change that can be shown to be abnormal.

  4. If they (the CC kooks) were successful implementing the things they claim are needed to fight climate change. They’ll end up with a permanent black out. Like the good ole days in the 17th century or earlier.

Oh, they could voluntarily start fighting CC now themselves by disconnecting their electric power lines, and gas lines, internet connection, selling their cars, tossing their smart phones, etc. iow go Amish, but they’re not doing that. Are they? Like all leftists ideas; they don’t make a smidgen of sense and are not practical. But it does reveal their ignorance and hypocrisy. I don’t care if they went to that world themselves, problem is they want to drag the rest of us with them.

  5. Climate-fearmongering socialists have no self-awareness. The only blackouts due to climate change will be imposed.

Sparks from a power line, transformer, substation, etc., can light up grass that then lights up shrubs and trees. Clearing the trees from around the power lines will help, but upgrading the grid to be able to handle winds without shorting is the only long-term solution. It ought to have been done decades ago, and they know it.

A lot of communities, homeowners and business owners, are going to want to disconnect themselves from PG&E’s grid and setup their own generators.

  6. The CA Government is like a forest fire. The deficit keeps growing and since there is no limit to how much money the politicians can waste on their pet Welfare State and so-called “Green Initiatives” they just continue to burn through money! The responsible thing to do is shut off the federal spigot. The American people should not have to fund the insanity known as California!

  7. It’s odd that Abrahm Lustgarten called it a “silver lining”. Usually when someone says “If you don’t do what we ask, this is what you’re gonna get”, it’s called “extortion”.

  8. if climate change is not addressed.

If you read PG&E’s reason for shutting power the root cause isn’t fire or dry brush or wind or some future climate thing, it’s because of actual climate change that has already happened. It’s not some apocalyptic future, it’s here and now, today, right this very instant. Of course, it’s a bunch of bullshit, but that’s what passes for excuses these days.

  9. If PG&E had been “allowed” to clear the brush around their plant, would any of this have happened?

Dudes come through here every 10 years or so and cut all the brush within 50 ft. of the power lines. Fewer outages in winter. No fires in summer.

Is that a gov’t caused “crisis?”

  10. Right. Blame your idiocy on PGE. Restrict generation sources and restrict power availability. We can’t produce more than is being used.

Man am I glad I’m out of the power business.

  11. Not 500 ft from where I live there is a parking lot with a dozen tree trimming trucks. They have been there for the last 12 years. Don’t tell me PGE isn’t trimming the trees. There must be millions trees and billions of scrub along the lines. All they have to miss is just one branch. Perfection is not possible. Get real.
